1st Annual JJMCMC Spelling Bee
“Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders One Word at a Time”
Jack and Jill Montgomery County Maryland held its first Annual Spelling Bee and Debate on Feb 28, 2010 at the Montgomery College Theater Arts Building. The theme of the event was "Preparing Tomorrow's Leaders One Word at a Time." WTTG-TV News Anchor Allison Seymour was the Mistress of Ceremonies, and specials included Rep. Donna F. Richards (D-Md.) and Vice Chairman of the Montgomery County School Board, Christopher Barclay. More than 90 children participated, with more than 200 family and friends showing up to support them. Students in grades 1 through 6 participated in the Spelling Bee. The finalists were:
First Grade
1st Place. Amara Nnawuchi, Flower Valley Elementary School
2nd Place. Shaloet James, Takoma Park Elementary School
3rd Place. Taran Sisler, Candlewood Elementary School
Second Grade
1st Place. Ava Evans,Takoma Park Elementary School

3rd Place. Howard Nicholson, Roberto Clemente Elementary School
Middle and High School students from the Jack and Jill Chapter participated in a Lincoln-style debate. They were Christopher Hairston, Kenneth Norris, Michelle Brooks, Chase Kea, and Thandi Young. And Jack and Jill Senior Teens Troy White, Danielle Moore, Cherrah Barclay, Leeah Tarrer, Joey Dillon, Abram White delivered a stirring reenactment of The Great Debaters: Wiley College v. Harvard University.
